The installation of a dental prosthesis is far from being an easy act, the main reason that can make you want to have a denture is to replace one or more missing teeth, or damaged ones. The problem is that patients are not well informed about existing solutions and different types of dental prostheses. Elderly persons are more likely to feel the need to replace all or part of their dentition. However, younger people may also turn to this solution as a result of caries or periodontitis.

By replacing your fallen or damaged teeth, a dental prosthesis will help you regain your ability to chew and have a nice smile. It will also have a protective role by preventing other teeth from moving.

There are several options available to patients who wish to replace one tooth or more, depending on their clinical condition. Indeed, dental technicians make removable, fixed, full or partial dentures from measurements, dental impressions and prescriptions from a dentist, or a specialist whether a prosthodontist or denturologist.

There are several dental prostheses types such as tooth crown and dental bridge that are attached to natural teeth as implants. The partial or full removable prosthesis is fixed on a support bar screwed on the implants by various dental fixtures. Regarding the partial or full fixed prosthesis replace the roots of the teeth and the partial prosthesis can be screwed or affixed by an orthodontic cement while the complete prosthesis must be screwed.

Removable dental prosthesis

Removable dentures are intended for the upper or lower jaw, or for both.. One of the great advantages of removable dentures is that they can be made quickly and can also be easily removed, when needed for daily care or simply to sleep. The colour of a removable dental prosthesis is the same as that of other teeth.

The teeth are in acrylic resin and their shapes are adjusted to that of the natural teeth. So, no one will notice that you wear a denture. Removable dentures can be divided into two subcategories; the full removable prosthesis, or denture, is intended to replace all teeth, 14 in all excluding the wisdom teeth, of a dental arch upper or lower jaw. The full prosthesis in the maxillary covers and rests on the palate. It is held in the mouth on the basis of the sucker principle which is created by the saliva accumulated between the prosthesis and the gum. The oral mucosa acts as a rubber seal. As for the mandible, it is held in place mechanically, that is to say according to the shape of the gum. The partial removable denture serves to replace one or more missing teeth in order to improve phonetics, chewing, as well as aesthetics. It is made of acrylic on a metal base. The retention of this prosthesis is provided by hooks which fit on the neighbouring natural teeth.

Crowned partial denture

The partial prosthesis crown is used when a tooth is broken, or does not have enough healthy natural tooth structure to support a composite resin or because of caries or devitalized following a treatment. In this case, the dentist proposes to the patient generally to make a crown. It is a restoration that will completely cover the tooth that supports it and will be fixed with a dental adhesive.

The dentist must first prepare the tooth that will receive it, then begins to reduce the size of the natural tooth by grinding it to create enough space to obtain a natural-looking crown. Once the tooth is reduced, the dentist takes an impression of this preparation which will then be transformed into a working model by the dental technician.

Fixed dental prosthesis

The fixed partial prosthesis consists of two options, the traditional dental bridge and Maryland bridge. The traditional dental bridge is a long-lasting option since it will be attached to the neighbouring teeth using porcelain-covered metal frames. It serves to join two abutment teeth using a suspended artificial tooth and can consequently connect several teeth according to the number and quality of the pillars. As for the butterfly bridge or the Maryland bridge, it is supported by metal fins, like butterfly wings, that will be attached to the nearby teeth. This procedure is considered when a tooth has been removed and the patient wants to avoid attacking the natural teeth by making a traditional bridge without cutting them.

Artificial dentures Materials

There are three types of material used to make dental plate. In fact, it depends mainly on the patient’s budget and preference. Each material has its requirements and responds to particular needs in terms of functionality, aesthetics and resistance.

The metal-ceramic, as its name says, is composed of two basic materials: a metal alloy and a dental ceramic. The alloy serves as a base, metal skeleton, to support the ceramic that covers it. While the ceramic-ceramic is a crown made entirely of ceramic, so more aesthetic, which gives it characteristics of light transmission closer to the natural dentition. Finally, the composite resin is used as a paste which must be cured with a light source. It has a shorter life than the ceramic crown.

Before Dental Prosthesis

There are several things to check before placing a fixed prosthesis. It is important that the dentist checks under the gum to prepare the tooth that will receive the prosthesis. This prevents in particular the appearance of a gray-ish reflection on the dental prosthesis caused by the frame which is under the ceramic and will eventually allow to obtain a more aesthetic and natural result. Occlusion is another major step, because it means that your upper and lower teeth will touch each other, and this promotes good chewing. If the occlusion is not successful, the fitting of your prosthesis will not help, since the patient will not be able to chew well. To verify that it is successful, your dentist will use a blue paper.

Advantages of dental Prosthesis

For those who have lost one, several or all of their teeth, the dental prosthesis aims to improve the quality of life in the following ways: it restores normal chewing function and reduces the weight of the masticatory forces on the structures still present in the mouth. Dental prosthesis ensures stability of the remaining healthy teeth by avoiding their movement in edentulous spaces. It also bridges the lack of support caused by missing teeth and promotes the speech of sounds requiring that the tongue presses on the teeth. It restores a socially acceptable oral aesthetic by maintaining facial features.
