When should I replace my breast implants?

Despite innovations in prosthetic materials, breast implants still decays over time and need to be replaced after a while. While there is no specific duration of life pertaining to breast implants, the latter are usually replaced after ten years following the procedure. However, surgeons still recommend post-surgical follow-up once your breast augmentation is completed to detect any complications that may require an early replacement of implants or to simply decide on when implant replacement should occur.

The procedure of implant replacement is performed in a similar way as its placement. Yet, while most replacements leave the same post-surgical scars, others result in additional scars around the breasts. The latter usually depends on whether the patient’s surgical wishes are consistent or not (as compared to her initial decision of placement). It also depends on the type of prosthetic material chosen in replacement surgery. Therefore, in implant replacement surgery, the patient has two options:

  • Choose implants that are identical to her initial ones
  • Choose implants that are different from her initial ones

Implant replacement surgery is performed according to the former position of implants and the degree of breast ptosis that the patient suffers from. If the latter is moderate, replacement will be done through the former incision and the new implants will be placed in front of the pectoral muscles. Breast lift surgery will thereafter conclude the entire procedure. Conversely, if the patient suffers from severe breast ptosis, lifting will be performed first; therefore, post-surgical scars will be different and implant replacement will be done at last.

It is important to keep in mind that implant replacement can occur earlier than expected following certain complications to breast augmentation surgery. For instance, capsular contracture is one case wherein the implant can be ruptured; with the latter leading to a visible deformation of the breasts and their hardening. This requires the urgent intervention of the doctor; the implants will be removed and replaced with new ones. Besides certain complications to breast augmentation surgery through implants, it is paramount to take care of your implants in order to maximize their life duration and prevent post-surgical complications. For instance, you may massage your breasts every once in a while using massaging oil to get your breasts accustomed to implants. It is also important to wear a bra that is adequate to your new breast size and shape. Avoid bras with an underwire as soon as you are permitted to wear traditional bras. The latter can cause irritation to breast incisions. Finally, bras are fundamental in maintaining your implants in place; so make sure to wear them regularly.

If your breasts are underdeveloped or small, mainly as a result of weight-loss, genetics, ex-reductive breast surgery, or pregnancy, our breast implantation surgery is the ideal solution for you. Breast implantation surgery aims at enhancing the size of the breasts and altering their shape in a way that suits the patient’s desires and body morphology. It is based on the insertion of breast implants; of which you will choose the size and shape following your surgeon’s recommendation.
